WHAT ARE THE HAVENING TECHNIQUES®?Chapter 1 of Fifteen Minutes to Freedom
“When an event or experience is perceived as traumatic or very stressful it becomes immutably encoded, often with life-altering consequences. However, recent research from the field of neuroscience has shown us how it's possible to modify this encoding. The Havening Techniques are methods which are designed to change the brain to de-traumatize the memory and permanently remove its negative effects from both our psyche and body” ~ Ronald A. Ruden, M.D., Ph.D.
The Havening Techniques represent a breakthrough in the rapid and effective treatment of stress-related physical and psychological conditions. Havening uses touch, attention and imagination to trigger electrochemical changes in the brain that alter how memories are processed.
The result of this simple procedure? Reduced stress, increased resilience, higher levels of achievement, and emotional, psychological and physical healing.
How does Havening work?
Dr. Ronald Ruden devoted over a decade to research the process of traumatic encoding: how the amygdala electrochemically ‘marks’ specific memories so that present-moment sensory input ‘triggers’ the fight/flight/freeze response.
His quest resulted in a breakthrough understanding of the process of depotentiation — how the processing of these memories can be changed on the synaptic level so that the discordant emotions previously activated no longer ‘invade’ the present moment. The Havening Techniques represent the practical fruitage of Dr. Ruden’s research. His 2011 book, When The Past Is Always Present, comprehensively articulates his discoveries.
Why does Havening matter?
According to Dr. Ruden’s model, Havening facilitates rapid, gentle and permanent electrochemical and physical change in the cells of the amygdala. Since this process of depotentiation occurs on the level of the individual neuron, the corresponding transformation can be nearly instantaneous. Skillful application of Havening Techniques therefore can produce significantly more rapid and efficient results than purely cognitive approaches to healing trauma.
Havening requires neither intake of drugs or use of special equipment. The transformation resulting from the successful application of Havening Techniques represents a new paradigm in the practical application of neuroscience to facilitate emotional and psychological healing.
What is the neuroscientific foundation of Havening?
The Havening Techniques emerged from Dr. Ruden’s extensive research, building on the juxtaposition and synthesis of his experience as a physician, his Ph.D. in biochemistry, and his curiosity as to the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the efficacy of energy psychology protocols. This research and Ruden’s conclusions are summarized in When The Past Is Always Present.
Constant experimentation and refinement, forged through clinical experience with over one thousand patients and clients before introducing Havening protocols to the general public in 2013, ultimately led to the development of an exquisitely simple, easy-to-apply and infinitely flexible set of tools that may be adapted and integrated into any therapeutic philosophy, healing profession, and scope of practice.
Research into the efficacy of the Havening Techniques continues on an ongoing basis. One study, documenting the impact of single sessions of Havening, has been published in the Health Science Journal (http://www.hsj.gr/medicine/impact-of-a-singlesession-of-havening.php?aid=7273). More clinical trials are currently underway, with publication dates beginning in 2017.
What can Havening do?
In the hands of a skilled practitioner, clinical experience indicates that Havening Techniques® can help:
Heal amygdala-based disorders, including panic attacks, phobias and PTSD.
Halt and reverse the long-term psychological and physiological impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences.
Heal the emotional and psychological residue left by traumatic experiences.
Remove inner blocks to goal achievement.
Enhance performance in sports, business and the creative and performing arts.
Build real-time resilience.
Reduce the impact of chronic negative stress.
Reduce emotional reactivity while broadening and building capacity to respond and adapt to challenge and change.
Relieve present-moment emotional discomfort.
Reduce and eliminate the emotional roots of chronic pain.
Havening is rapidly spreading worldwide. Over 150 Certified Practitioners in 21 countries are helping their clients reduce stress, build resilience, optimize well-being and heal the pain of the past.

About the interviews
Each of the following chapters originated as an interview conducted by phone or Skype. I have done my best to preserve the essence of each interviewee’s authentic voice, while editing the transcripts to ensure clarity and readability.
Nonetheless, you will notice on occasion the kinds of non-traditional sentence structures and grammatical imperfections that occur commonly in spoken conversation.
